Google Affiliate Network Retires
Yesterday, Google Affiliate Network, commonly referred to as GAN, announced its decision to “…retire…and focus on other products that are driving great results for clients.”
Read Google’s official network closing notification here.
While the news was shocking for some, we can’t say the affiliate community was surprised by the decision. With GAN’s tracking problems in Safari, reports of poor publisher and merchant communication and overall lackluster support from the community, it was time for Google to concentrate efforts on other initiatives.
What does this mean for merchants on GAN?
This largely depends on their overall affiliate marketing strategy. Those on multiple networks will look to migrate their existing GAN publisher base, while those that were exclusively utilizing GAN will look to reach out to new networks to open discussion. Whether you are looking to migrate your existing affiliate program to an existing network of choice or are looking to launch on a new network, we are well versed at handling program migration. Contact us to discuss ways we can make even the most complex migration an easy process for your brand.
What does this mean for publishers on GAN?
Affiliate marketing is an important and valuable piece of a brand’s digital marketing strategy. A majority of merchants will be hard at work crafting their contingency plan and will be in touch shortly to let you know their next steps. Others will flounder if they depended largely on Google to handle the day to day and some may make the decision to close. We hope that publishers heed this change as a warning that our industry is ever-evolving and will work to create their own disaster recovery plan to ensure their business continues to drive revenue.
